“I make paintings and drawings that are investigative, working with ideas we see as abstract but are as real as the physical world
we live in. In colour, mark, shape and gesture I find the fluidity and freedom to convey those spaces inside and outside us that we know, sense and feel. Trying to get to the bottom of something not always known; being fully aware and totally unsure”

Kate Jacob works in mixed media primarily acrylic with ink, crayon and pastels, on paper and canvas. A mass of marks counter unpopulated space while repeated punctuated lines and patterns jump around. In the paintings the colour palette is extensive as pastel colours wrestle with popping neons and muddy greys; drawings work a more restricted palette mainly in grey scale. As playful and accidental as considered and constructed they slowly evolve as captured moments in time in a constant flux between what was, is and might be.

Kate plays with the materiality and application of paint creating surface and depth to explore memory and loss, judging the moment we forget and the moment we remember. The finished work is somehow intimate and infinite, vulnerable and unbreakable.
